What Happens When a Low-Code Platform Meets Battleships?

Do you remember playing Battleship? It’s the game where you try to track and sink your opponent’s ships before they manage to do the same to you. It was a lot of fun and made the task of coordinating a navy look easy. In reality, managing a navy and all of its assets — vessels, aircraft and munitions, not to mention all of the personnel associated with operating and maintaining those assets — is a huge undertaking. The post explores how a low-code platform helped Atos build and deliver custom applications.

To understand how complicated that actually is, just ask Atos. A global consulting and systems integration company, Atos counts the Royal Navies of Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Oman among its customers. Atos is also the developer of AMPS™, the highly sophisticated asset management system that all four of these navies use to manage their physical assets. When Atos needed to update that system to ensure that it could meet the needs of a modern navy, it knew it would need help.

As part of the update, Atos wanted to be sure that the new version of its solution was flexible enough to integrate with a wide range of enterprise resource planning (ERP) and other legacy systems and that it would support:

  • Secure mobile access both online and off
  • Synchronization for highly distributed users
  • Real-time asset tracking and reporting
  • A number of deployment configurations ranging from secure cloud to on-premises

In addition, Atos wanted to make building and testing the new platform a faster, easier, and more client engaging process. As if that weren’t enough, it would also have to meet some of the most stringent security requirements in the world.

AMPS users had their own requirements. They wanted easier, more efficient ways to process transactions so that they spend more of their time on other value-added work and a better user experience.

When Low-Code Meets Agile and DevOps

Atos knew that meeting all of these objectives as quickly as possible wasn’t going to be easy. In fact, it would mean having to completely transform the way it developed software by adopting an agile approach and end-to-end application development support. To accomplish both, Atos chose OutSystems.

Partnering with OutSystems was a logical choice for a number of reasons. For example, it gave Atos the fast, iterative development it needed along with the frictionless deployment and testing cycles critical for speeding up time to delivery. And, because OutSystems is designed to fit in an organization’s existing architecture, it was easy to integrate with preferred tools as part of the development and deployment process. Atos was using Rally’s agile project management software as part of its own software development strategy. Integrating OutSystems with Rally allowed Atos to significantly increase the efficiency of its software development sprints.  

Developing a Totally New AMPS Solution

Using OutSystems, Atos was able to automate the majority of its testing, dramatically reducing the amount of time required for regression testing. Plus, OutSystems let Atos enhance the solution’s user experience and make it available on virtually any device.

Ultimately, with the help of OutSystems, Atos was able to build an enhanced, enterprise-grade version of AMPs, giving the navies it serves all of the functionality they needed. Not only that, the experience helped convince Atos of the value of using low-code application and deployment methods. In fact, today OutSystems is Atos Australia’s technology of choice for developing its mobile applications.

Again the battle ships needed to be bigger ( much wider)and longer. It also needed smaller and more numerous water tight compartments and deeper draft so even multiple bombs would never reach the magazine. If this had happened we would of seen the entire US fleet engaging one ship and it would of escaped. The design flaws made it fail.
