The City of Oakland is on a mission to transform its digital services for citizens. The impact to communities will be widespread, giving all residents access and greater transparency to the services the city offers. But like many in the government sector, they faced budget and resource limitations, and building native applications was too slow and costly. To truly transform its digital services, first the city needed to transform how it builds them.
Having worked with OutSystems in the private sector before, Andrew “Pete” Peterson, City of Oakland CIO and CTO, knew the platform would be vital in building numerous applications with a lean team of five developers and one manager. By streamlining the coding process, OutSystems allows them to move faster and stay focused on the business logic, like strategic objectives, data rules and calculations, and user experience across applications, which are essential to success.
Within the first six months of using OutSystems, the city has built numerous applications, including a new human resource management application that they estimate saved the city $1,000,000. They were also able to provide residents with a secure, single sign-on portal to all web-based city applications available to them. OAK APPS makes it easy for citizens to access the services their tax dollars are supporting and gives the city a single view of each resident. The city plans to use this information to cross-market relevant services to residents, widening the impact of the city’s digital transformation.
