Celebrating Women's History Month - Part 3

Hello OutSystems Community!

In honor of Women's History Month, the OutSystems team wants to recognize and highlight some remarkable women from our community. From mentoring students to being featured on A 1000 Voices, these women are continuously uplifting those around them and inspiring others along the way. For this week’s post, we asked these four women to share some of the challenges they faced, how they overcome these challenges and reflected on some of their proudest moments.

Check out their inspiring stories and responses below:

Name: Helena de Matos Dias (she/her)

Company: Team Resilience

Title: OutSystems Developer

Question: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in your career and how did you overcome those?

Answer: Coming from a completely different area of study than technology, one of the biggest challenges for me personally, was to restructure my way of thinking and build a completely new way of working.

It was hard at first, trying to wrap my mind around concepts and ideas that were mostly foreign to me, but with some persistence and a lot of study it eventually clicked into place.

Now the entire process comes more as a second nature and it is something that I greatly enjoy.

Name: Samantha McKinley

Company: All Agile Solutions

Title: Engagement Manager

Question: What are some of the things you are most proud of?

Answer: One of the proudest moments I have had (and I still need to pinch myself) is that I took the leap and opened my own business, right in the middle of COVID-19 lock down. With everyone working remotely, I saw a gap where I could help numerous companies run and manage their projects. Since I opened on 13th June 2020 to now, I have had the opportunity to work with incredible people, and on some amazing projects. I have never worked as hard as what I am now, but I smile daily. As it sits, my team has expanded to an automation tester, and a manual tester. I hope to grow my clientele (globally) and hire project managers that have the same drive and passion for business solutions as what I do.

Name: Samiksha Manekar

Company: Persistent System

Job Title: Software Engineer

Question: What are some of the challenges you've faced in your career and how did you overcome those? What are some of the things you are most proud of?

Answer: My student life was very boring with coding and now I am having fun with OutSystems “Low code platform”. OutSystems added color in my IT career life. OutSystems Community inspired me to help others. Now I am trying to add color in students' lives by motivating them to adopt their career through OutSystems.

I am very proud to be an OutSystems developer, teacher and mentor.

At Last my favorite code “Give good to others, It will reflect back to you”.

Name: Jeanene Williams (She/Her)

Company: IT Vision Australia

Title: Deputy Manager – Software Development

Question: What are some of the challenges you've faced in your career and how did you overcome those? What are some of the things you are most proud of?

Answer: When I was younger I was always very quiet, preferred my own company and had a great deal of difficulty with getting up in front of people. This made it very hard to socialise and promote myself and could very easily have ended up with me just sitting behind a desk as a junior programmer for a long time. Fortunately my first boss noticed something in me and showed me how to stretch myself and always strive to improve every time I did something. This resulted in me not accepting any of my shortcomings going from junior programmer to Technical Director in under 5 years. Some of the things that I am particularly proud of are:

  • Product as runner up for Byte magazine’s best communications software at CEBIT Hanover in 1996

  • Product winning WAITA (Western Australian Information & Technology Awards) - 1998 Best Telecommunications Product & Project

  • Becoming General Manager of Development in a public company in 2002

  • Product Runner up in WAITA – 2004 Product category

  • Being elected to the Australian Computer Society's National Diversity & Inclusion Council

  • Being selected amongst the first OutSystems Champions
