Do you mean the id of the selected item?

Can you share your oml, explaining what you are trying to achieve?

If you use the Empty Text option of the drop-down you can customize the first value that is shown and the id of that value will always be an empty value ( depending on your variable type )  

If the Empty Text value is emty the first item of your list wi be associated with the first option. 

You can allways check the value of the variable when saving or on the OnChange Event
