The AI Summarizer build on top of Summarizer API which uses a model trained to generate high-quality summaries. The API is built into Chrome, and Gemini Nano is the model downloaded the first time a website uses this API.

Steps to Use the AI Summarizer and its AI Model in Chrome:

1. Ensure You Have the Right Chrome Version:

• The AI Summarizer is available starting from Chrome 138 (desktop only).

• How to check your Chrome version:

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click the three vertical dots (menu icon) in the top-right corner.

  3. Go to "Help" > "About Google Chrome."

  4. Chrome will display your current version and automatically check for updates.

2. Meet the System Requirements:

• Since the AI model runs on-device, your computer needs to meet certain specifications:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or 11; macOS 13+ (Ventura and onwards); or Linux.

  • Storage: At least 22 GB free disk space on the volume containing your Chrome profile. (The model itself is a few gigabytes, but Chrome requires this much free space for its operations).

  • GPU: Strictly more than 4 GB of VRAM.

  • Network: An unmetered connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet are typically unmetered, cellular connections might be metered).

• Important Note: If your system doesn't meet these requirements, the API might silently fail or not provide any output.
