Well, a colleague, Gonçalo Fonseca, stumble upon this problem. So the audio was working on the andoid, but not on the iphone, however it should be working... at least this was what I thought!
The first consideration, was that this might be caused by the standalone mode of safari (he's was using a hibrid app). So to troubleshoot this he created a simple page with the same audio file, and accessed from the mobile safari, and it worked... So the problem appeared more and more to be related with the standalone. After some googling, we stumbled this thread in the stack overflow...

So the problem is, as soon as, your web app, gets added to the home screen or "lives" as a hibrid app, it will only play audio if the ring tone is not on mute.
