Why is this a new component and not a new version of the existing component? Having two separate components like this causes confusion.

Yes... the correct route is to join the team for the other one, update it, and make a new version, this way people using the old version get an update, and there is only one result in search. It also works out better for you because your community ranking will be helped by all of the downloads and positive votes on the old component. :)
