Database

When working with GIS information spatial data must be stored in the sql server spatial data type. Unfortunatly there is no native support to map this data type to an OutSystems data type.

Changed the status to

Hi Paul,

Thank your for submitting your idea.

This is in fact something that can be explored since all most used database engines already support this kind of data type. Despite, currently, there are no plans to add this new data type to the OutSystems language, I will left this idea marked as under our radar to get some feedback on how providing this will help our customers  and to understand the demand for this.

Cheers!

I was a little shocked and slightly disappointed that spatial data types are not supported as (as you mentioned) the majority of database engines do support this as a general capability.

In general I found there to be a lack of GIS related components and functions, with the exception of Google (but as a GIS developer, that is not helpful as it is not a very good GIS engine) and maybe very basic leaflet.

One of the major flaws I have found is support with offline basemaps and offline map work. I had to rebuild this concept from the ground using leaflet components and some GIS trickery within Outsystems. Be great to see support of either spatial data types within DB or better integrations with offline capabilities with the likes of the Esri suite and formats (even local DB GIS functions like intersects or distance calcs would be advantageous and are currently supported in native DB)

There are some reasonably easy wins to be had in the offline/online geospatial space, and with Outsystems competitive pricing (fraction of other GIS mobile application stacks), there is a huge market waiting to be tapped.

Cheers.
