Hello community,
We are facing an imminent migration of our on premises Outsystems servers to Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE). We have been assured that the IP and hostname and many other server attributes will be retained and exisiting firewall rules will be migrated.
We are trying to assess what impacts this will have (if any) on our applications and dev environments.
For example, will we need to re-install license and/or republish all of our applications.
I would be grateful if anyone could share their experience if they have been through this process.
Thanks,
Andy
@Andy Cody : As I understand it, you have an on-premises VMware setup and are migrating to Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE). In this case, you’ll essentially be running the same VMware environment, but on Google’s infrastructure instead of your own data center.
If your IPs, hostnames, and key configuration settings are preserved as planned, your setup should work as is - with no need to reinstall licenses or make other changes.
Hello.
Back in the old days (as in a decade ago) any change in hardware would trigger an alarm and you would need to transfer the license from the "old" frontend server to the "new" (even if they were the same with just a new piece of virtual hardware).
My main concern would be firewall settings and hardware changes. but when you migrate development you will see.
Open a ticket with support to schedule the migration just like you would for an upgrade. Do DEV during the day so you can test everything. A few days later, the same for QA. And finally PRD, probably in the night to be less disruptive.
Check if the MAC address of the NICs will change, that is one of the typical hardware changes that causes a new serial number to be generated. If that happens, you would need to re-register the environment and upload the new license file.
Thank you @Siya @Nuno Reis and @Sérgio Miranda for your informed responses.
The MAC addresses of the servers will not change so we are hopeful we will not need to re-resigter the environments.
I agree, Nuno, about the firewall settings, the first batch of (non production) envirnoments will be migrated this weekend so we will see.
Thanks again for your advice and suggestions, if we have issues I will report here for other community members.
Andy.
