I'm sorry you had a bad experience using this component.
This is a bug on the sample data module that I'll have to fix when I have some time available.

The sample data doesn't have much content yet (just some users with pictures),
you can do the following instead:

1 - Create users on the Users module >  https://<your_personal_url>/Users   (use your credentials to access it)
2 - Login with each new user on the social network
3 - On the profile page, add a picture.
