Revamp OutSystems UI with Modern Layouts and Templates
Created on 03 Jan
Ricardo Monteiro
8
While OutSystems UI provides a solid foundation for functionality, the default Layouts (Top Menu, Side Menu, etc.) and screen templates have started to feel a bit dated compared to modern web standards (e.g., Vercel, Stripe, modern SaaS dashboards). Currently, frontend developers spend a significant amount of time overriding default CSS, adjusting padding, shadows, and font hierarchies to make applications look "fresh" and less like a standard enterprise tool. The Idea: I propose introducing a new set of "Modern" Layouts and Themes within OutSystems UI that prioritize current design trends out-of-the-box. What this should include: Cleaner Aesthetics: More generous whitespace, softer shadows, and modern border-radius defaults. Updated Navigation: Sidebar and Topbar designs that feel more like modern SaaS products (e.g., collapsible floating menus, blurred/glassmorphism backgrounds). Typography Focus: Better default font scaling and hierarchy for readability. Native Dark Mode Polish: Improved contrast ratios for the default dark mode. The Benefit: Faster Time-to-Market: Developers won't need to waste time writing custom CSS just to make the app look modern. Better Sales PoCs: Out-of-the-box apps will look impressive immediately, helping sell the platform to UI-conscious clients. Developer Experience: A more inspiring starting point for UI design. Let’s give OutSystems applications a fresh coat of paint by default!

Native Image Optimization for High Performance Mobile Apps
Created on 03 May
Hidur M

As a Software Engineer, I have noticed that handling high-resolution images is a common challenge in mobile performance. Applications like marketplaces Apps often deal with numerous user-uploaded product images, which can lead to slow loading times and high data consumption. The Proposal: I suggest implementing a Native Image Optimization feature directly within the OutSystems mobile framework. Key Features: Automatic Client-Side Compression: Images should be automatically compressed on the device before being uploaded to the server to save bandwidth. WebP Support: Built-in support to convert images to modern formats like WebP, which offer superior compression without losing quality. Dynamic Image Resizing: The ability to serve different image resolutions based on the user's device screen size and network conditions (2G, 3G, or 4G/5G). Lazy Loading & Caching: Advanced, easy-to-configure caching mechanisms to ensure that images load instantly for returning users. Why it matters: This feature will significantly enhance the user experience (UX) for mobile users in regions with limited internet connectivity. It will also reduce infrastructure costs related to storage and data transfer for developers and businesses alike.

Destination widget option to open in new tab
Created on 06 Dec 2025

Would be great to have a simple option to set the destination as a new tab rather than existing tab (maybe a dropdown as the image below). This is particularly useful in client actions, there are work arounds to solve this but require actions to check environment or current domain and these are always harcoded in some way.

Show which certification exam a voucher applies to
Created on 12 Jan

I often receive certification vouchers but don’t schedule the exam right away. After some time, it becomes difficult to remember which exam each voucher is intended for. It would be very helpful if the voucher email clearly stated the associated certification exam, or if there were a section in the user profile where we could view all available vouchers and see which exams they apply to.

OutSystems Dinosaurs

Our community has developers with many years of experience but for some reason or another, some of them don't have certifications... But they still are good developers and part of our community. This year several times I have heard during the Next Step and OWDC people saying "well I can't collect the certification badges because I don't have one. But I still like OutSystems and have been using it for years already".In a way to bring our community together and make everybody more embraced by our swag what about create a new badge?!Let's create the dinosaur badge and give it to the ones with more than 10 years of OutSystems experience!!!!Unfortunately, I'm not part of those with more than 10 years =( hehe

Metrics to assess cache usage
Created on 23 Oct 2024
Rui Madaleno

Regarding O11 and its caching capabilities (cache in minutes property on aggregates and server actions) it would be useful to have some metrics that allows us to understand the cache misses/cache hits or even cache miss ratio so that we validate if the cache in minutes property is being used wisely. The goal here is to catch the incorrect usage of cache in minutes, sometimes this feature is uses without doing the right assessment of data skewness and its usage. Sometimes the evolution and usage of the applications makes the business data to grow/change making the cache somehow less useful Having a cache with 70% miss ratio means we are missing the cache 7 out of 10 times, meaning, we are wasting resources (in this particular case, cache should not be used) Its hard to find which modules and core are using cache. Its hard to check the cache size. Providing this metric would allows development teams and CoE to have visibility on the cache usage and adapt

Many posts can be found on the Forums about how to calculate the difference between two dates in milliseconds. The current Diff-functions that are available as built-in functions are DiffDays() , DiffHours() , DiffMinutes() and DiffSeconds() .Let's add a DiffMilliseconds() function to that list to speed up development even more as it comes in handy for numerous use cases.

An app that allows small local businesses that do or do not have website/ e-commerce to advertise their services and changes , in context of COVID-19, on their business operations t o local Neighbors. As main users, we will have citizens and Local business owners/representativesThe main use cases we propose are: Local businesses can sign up through a platform and fill in their information , like: Updated opening hours/delivery hours, contact information, location, list of services they deliver, changes to their business operations in effect right now and series of small posts/tweets Citizens can easily find and consult the information above in their immediate neighborhood / current location. They should be able to filter by services and even quickly find who is open or delivering right now or for a certain time. They can then contact the local business or head there. The main challenges we are assuming that we going to face with are:Getting the local businesses to sign up;Information can be outdated fast;Validating the information given (avoid fake businesses and misinformationIt needs to be easy for businesses to use.

Show developer Name instead of username in service studio
Created on 03 Oct 2024
Alexander Bouma

Currently it is the case that the username for the developer is shown in the created by field for server actions etc. This can be confusing when the username is not in a readable format when it is forced by the company you work at. The name for the developer can be changed and should be readable.
