OutSystems, a leading AI development platform, today announced that Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), one of the world’s leading transportation companies, has catalyzed its digital transformation journey utilizing OutSystems. The global shipping and logistics company is deploying AI-powered low-code to streamline development, rapidly upgrading its operational systems to drive business agility and growth.
Previously, NYK Line relied on a different low-code platform to build basic internal tools, while more complex demands were met by in-house teams who often had to develop solutions from scratch. However, as the company intensified its digital transformation push to strengthen business resilience, a critical need arose for a versatile development platform that could deliver applications with greater speed, offer advanced functionalities, and facilitate deeper collaboration between business and IT teams. Additionally, the platform needed to comply with NYK Line’s strict security and governance requirements.
OutSystems, with a proven track record enabling the development of an electronic currency platform for seafarers at an NYK Line subsidiary, was adopted to fulfill all these objectives. Since its implementation, NYK Line has deployed nearly 30 applications across five business units and achieved several key business outcomes, including:
Revamped the Cargo ship inquiry system: NYK Line first modernized its legacy system managing car carrier information, which had been built using a combination of Java and a traditional low-code platform. By rebuilding its cargo request system with OutSystems, the company reduced the entire workflow by 30% and sped up development time by up to 50%.
Improved development efficiency through component standardization and rapid prototyping: To further accelerate development speed, around 20 key functions were converted into reusable components, streamlining workflows and reducing duplication. OutSystems also enabled teams to quickly create mock-ups, supporting flexible user-centric development from the requirements phase onward.
Equipped developers to build applications within one month: The intuitive, visual development interface of OutSystems allowed individuals of varying experience levels to contribute to app development after just one month of self-study.
“OutSystems has become an indispensable tool in our digital transformation journey. Its value becomes increasingly evident the more we use it, particularly in areas like maintaining a ‘clean core’ approach in our SAP S/4HANA integration, and improving development efficiency through component standardization,“ said Tetsuya Tanaka, Smart Work Team & Data Management Team, DX Promotion Group, NYK Line. “Furthermore, the overseas case studies and insights provided by OutSystems are especially instrumental as we look to expand internationally. We are excited to continue deepening our use of OutSystems to drive IT infrastructure modernization and business transformation.”
“We are truly honored that NYK Line, a leading global logistics company, has chosen to adopt OutSystems as its foundation for application development,” said Tomohiro Mieno, Representative Director of OutSystems Japan. “By supporting NYK Line’s ‘ambidextrous management’ and ‘clean core’ strategies as a technology partner, we look forward to playing a continued role in driving their global business development and empowering their next phase of growth with AI-powered low-code.”
Looking ahead, NYK will continue to utilize OutSystems to evolve its existing IT infrastructure into a more flexible and scalable form. In parallel, NYK will promote the development of in-house developers and the penetration of the system into user departments, thereby strengthening its development structure.
