How Thermo Fisher fuels high velocity innovation with OutSystems

Rajkiran Vajreshwari, Senior Manager of the App Development team

Customers in the sciences, applied technology and healthcare industries trust Thermo Fisher Scientific to accelerate research, solve complex analytical challenges, improve patient diagnostics, and increase laboratory productivity.

As the world leader in scientific instrumentation, Thermo Fisher’s global organization of 125,000 employees are all committed to operating with integrity, intensity, innovation, and involvement. In keeping with those values, they encourage employees to bring ideas for internal solutions to Rajkiran Vajreshwari, who leads the team responsible for turning those ideas into enterprise-grade applications.

Given the mission-critical nature of Thermo Fisher’s work, with high standards for precision and performance, Rajkiran and his team wanted to explore opportunities to shorten development cycles and deliver their stakeholders working applications faster. So they embarked on a search for a new development platform that would accelerate digital transformation while safely integrating AI into their operations.

Why did Rajkiran choose OutSystems? He says it was originally the visual environment for building and reusing components, with the ability to connect the apps and agents securely with internal core systems and data. Excited by their initial success on the platform, Rajkiran’s team set up a Center of Excellence program around OutSystems development to scale governance and delivery across their global organization.

So far the CoE has launched over 100 applications with OutSystems, including an intelligent customer escalation app that uses AI agents built with Agent Workbench. This agentic app analyzes customer tickets and executes action plans, reducing ticket resolution time from one to two hours to just one minute.

Today, the team is using Mentor, the agentic systems engineering tool from OutSystems, to translate requirements documents to working AI-generated code. “Mentor has changed the way we develop applications. Being able to upload a document and have a ready-made application, including UI, logic, and data models, in just a few minutes is fantastic. It gives the team the freedom to focus on solving the business problem rather than on technicalities,” explains Rajkiran.
