MarCoPay—which stands for Maritime Community Pay—has a mission to support a better quality of life for seafarers, their families, and friends. Founded in Manila in 2019, the company is licensed as an Electronic Money Issuer by the central bank of the Philippines.

Seafarers have typically carried cash to a bank or remittance center when making a port visit to send money home. This exposes them to risk and makes ships a lucrative target for pirates, as they know they can find cash onboard.

MarCoPay wanted to launch a new and unique product—a dual currency eWallet mobile app specifically designed to serve seafarers, their families, and friends to address these issues.

Frontend Development Calls for Faster Agile Development

MarCoPay spent a year developing a sophisticated and unique backend that uses a cloud-based ledger connected to a satellite network. This ensures that MarCoPay reliably records seafarers’ transactions, even though internet access at sea is often intermittent.

But to rapidly deliver a frontend mobile experience, MarCoPay wanted a much faster low-code way to speed up development. That need for speed and agility brought MarCoPay to OutSystems.

Working with OutSystems partner TESI, MarCoPay developed its dual-currency eWallet mobile app in a fraction of the time compared to traditional development.
