To the Drawing Board to Solve a Dangerous Problem

Challenge - Experience design company Sooth set out to solve a dangerous challenge for Japanese construction and engineering companies: heatstroke. Since it is difficult to prevent and predict, accidental heatstroke happens every year. Workers tend to keep doing their work, even though they feel sick. With no method of checking and monitoring the physical condition of each worker before and during work, managers usually learn about a heatstroke event only after a worker becomes sick. Not only does heatstroke pose a physical danger to workers’ health, but it also negatively affects construction timelines. Sooth wanted to devise a system that would check each worker’s physical condition in real-time, predict the likelihood of heatstroke for each worker, and notify the worker and manager when the danger of heatstroke is detected so that the worker can rest.

A Life-Saving Smart Helmet

Solution - Working with OutSystems Elite Partners BlueMeme and Altitude Inc., Sooth’s strategic partner, Sooth successfully developed a prototype that decreases heatstroke-related accidents for Japanese construction and engineering companies. The Heatstroke Prevention Project combines a smart device helmet with multiple embedded vital sensors and an integrated application with a rich interface for workers and managers to check and monitor physical conditions to prevent heatstroke. When heatstroke is predicted, managers and workers receive notification on their iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch to take appropriate prevention actions immediately. The project took three OutSystems developers, one project manager, and two other development members just 3 months to complete, versus an estimated 18 months using traditional development methods.

Preventing Accidents Prevents Delay

Results - Thanks to the user-friendly UI/UX, workers are easily adopting the newly introduced solution. As the smart system successfully decreases the number of accidents due to heatstroke, working conditions have improved. It is now easier than ever to prevent accidents from heatstroke that endanger worker health and cause a negative impact on construction timelines. It is projected that the Heatstroke Prevention Project will save millions in costs for the recovery of these types of accidents.
